Fashion as an “American art form” – Michelle Obama
The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) honored the US First Lady, Michelle Obama during the awards night in New York last June 15. She praised the industry in her pre-taped video message “Fashion is an American art form with ingenuity and craftsmanship that contribute so much to our economy and culture.”
She is the “meteoric rise as a fashion icon”, the CFDA president Diane Von Furstenberg paid tribute to the wife of President Barack Obama. According to her, she had a unique look that balances the duality of her lives as an adviser and mother to Sasha, eight and Malia, 10.
The Awards
Womenswear Designer of the Year Award
The pair beat off stiff competition from Narciso Rodriguez and Marc Jacobs to land the prize, with the latter – accompanied by partner Lorenzo Martone – also missing out to Proenza Scouler for Accessories Designer of the Year. However, he was honoured with the InternationalAward for his work at Louis Vuitton.

Women’s Wear Daily editor-in-chief Edward Nardoza was honoured with the Eugenia Sheppard Award
The creative director of GQ, Jim Moore, took the Eleanor Lambert Award.
